Apple iPhone Ultra Coming Soon

Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone at the confirmed "Surprise and shine" event on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This is Apple's first new iPhone form factor since the iPhone X in 2017.

The name is not confirmed. Reporting has shifted from "iPhone Fold" toward iPhone Ultra, but Apple has said nothing official.

The design is a book-style fold with a roughly 7.8-inch inner display in a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 5.5-inch cover screen. The two significant departures from the rest of the iPhone line are Touch ID replacing Face ID, and only two rear cameras.

Apple has confirmed the event date and nothing else. All specifications below come from supply chain reports, analyst estimates and leaked accessory moulds.

Price in Pakistan

• 12GB + 256GB — Rs. 1,050,000 (estimated, PTA Approved)
• 12GB + 512GB — Rs. 1,150,000 to Rs. 1,300,000 (estimated)
• 1TB and 2TB — Rs. 1,400,000 and above (estimated)

US pricing estimates have moved upward as launch approached. Earlier consensus sat at $1,999. Taiwanese research firm TrendForce now estimates a starting price of $2,099 to $2,299, with top configurations potentially exceeding $3,000.

These Pakistan figures are rough. The final US price is unknown, the rupee rate at launch is unknown, and importer markups on a supply-constrained first-generation product are unpredictable.

Expect very limited availability. Apple's own production is reported to be constrained, and Pakistan is not a first-wave launch country. For the first few months, most units reaching Pakistan will likely be non-PTA imports at a steep markup.

Design

A wider, squatter fold rather than the tall narrow design Samsung uses — closer to a passport in proportion.

Leaked measurements put it at roughly 4.5mm thick when open and 9 to 9.5mm when folded. The frame is titanium with glass, similar to the iPhone Air's construction.

Apple is reported to be using a hinge engineered specifically to minimise the crease, with claims of a crease depth under 0.15mm against roughly 0.3mm on the Galaxy Z Fold series.

Third-party case moulds show a Camera Control button but no Action Button, which has been standard on Pro iPhones since the iPhone 15 Pro.

Colours are expected to be muted: black or dark gray, plus silver or white. A deep blue similar to the iPhone 17 Pro Max has also been mentioned.

Apple reportedly developed a stylus for the device but decided against launching it with the first generation because of concerns around the folding screen.

Display

Inner display: Approximately 7.76 to 7.8 inches OLED in a 4:3 aspect ratio. That is closer to an iPad mini than to a phone screen, so the unfolded experience should feel like a small tablet rather than a stretched phone.

Cover display: Approximately 5.5 inches OLED, usable as a normal phone when folded, though narrower than a standard iPhone.

Resolution, refresh rate and brightness figures have not been credibly leaked. ProMotion is expected on both panels.

Biometrics

Touch ID replaces Face ID. The sensor is built into the side power button, the same system Apple uses on cheaper iPads.

The reason appears to be physical: the TrueDepth camera array needs depth that a 4.5mm chassis cannot provide. If you rely on Face ID for Apple Pay and app authentication, this changes daily use.

Processor

Apple A20 Pro on TSMC's 2nm process, the same chip expected in the iPhone 18 Pro models. Some reports point to the standard A20 instead; branding is unresolved.

Vapour chamber cooling has been mentioned but is not firmly reported.

Memory & Storage

12GB RAM. Storage tiers are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.

Camera

Two rear cameras, both 48MP — a main wide and an ultra-wide. There is no telephoto lens, which is a notable omission at this price.

The front camera is reported at 24MP in the most recent leak, with earlier reports suggesting 18MP. Some reports claim two front cameras, one for each display.

For a device costing more than two iPhone 18 Pro units, the camera system is the clearest compromise. Anyone buying primarily for photography is better served by the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Battery & Charging

Reports here conflict significantly and are worth reading carefully.

Early reports suggested 5,400 to 5,800 mAh, which would have made it the largest battery in any iPhone. A later regulatory filing pointed to a dual-cell design of 1,921 mAh plus 2,962 mAh, totalling roughly 4,883 mAh — one cell in each half of the device.

The dual-cell design is supported by iOS 27 beta code, which refers to "batteries" in the plural where it previously used the singular.

Either figure has to drive two displays. Battery life is likely to be a compromise on this device rather than a strength.

MagSafe is expected. Mark Gurman has said all indications point to it being included, noting Apple fitted MagSafe into the similarly thin iPhone Air. Charging speeds have not been reported.

Software

iOS 27 with foldable-specific features. Reports describe a split-screen mode allowing two full-size iPhone apps side by side on the inner display, plus additional modes that use the hinge position.

Siri runs on Google's Gemini models beneath Apple's own foundation model layer, as Apple confirmed for iOS 27 across the lineup.

Connectivity

Apple's C2 modem and the N2 connectivity chip with Wi-Fi 7 are expected. A physical SIM tray is unlikely in a 4.5mm chassis, so eSIM-only is probable, though not confirmed.

Buying in Pakistan

Apple operates no store in Pakistan, physical or online. Official stock comes through Mercantile, Apple's authorised distributor, and its authorised resellers. Independent importers supply everything else.

Three points specific to this device:

Availability will be poor. Supply is expected to be tight even in Apple's launch markets. Official PTA-approved stock may take considerably longer to reach Pakistan than the roughly ten days the iPhone 17 series took.

PTA tax will be substantial. Registration through DIRBS is mandatory or the phone loses cellular service. PTA verifies the IMEI; FBR calculates the tax at registration using that day's dollar rate. Because the tax scales with customs value, a device above $2,000 will attract considerably more than the roughly Rs. 213,000 an iPhone 17 Pro Max costs on CNIC. Check dirbs.pta.gov.pk before committing.

Repairs are the real risk. The folding display and hinge are the most fragile and most expensive components in any foldable, and Pakistan has limited authorised Apple service capacity even for standard iPhones. If the inner screen or hinge fails on a grey-import unit, there may be no practical local repair path. This is a strong argument for buying PTA-approved with warranty despite the price gap.

Verdict

Most buyers should wait for the second generation.

The trade-offs on this one are real: no Face ID, no telephoto camera, battery capacity split across two screens, a first-generation hinge with no reliability track record, minimal repair support in Pakistan, and a price that buys two iPhone 18 Pro Max units with money left over.

Bloomberg has already reported that Apple is developing a second-generation foldable, codenamed V78, for a 2027 release. Apple's first-generation hardware has historically improved substantially in its second iteration.

It makes sense if you specifically want a tablet and phone in one device and the 4:3 inner screen fits how you work. Apple has spent longer than any competitor on the crease problem, and if the claims hold, this may be the first foldable where the fold is genuinely invisible.

For most buyers in Pakistan, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the better purchase this year at roughly half the price.
