Apple iPhone Duo

Apple officially unveiled its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, at its "Surprise and Shine" event on 9 September 2026 — the first keynote led by new Apple CEO John Ternus. It's the biggest change to the iPhone's form factor since the iPhone X dropped the home button in 2017.

Pre-orders open 16 October 2026, with the phone reaching customers from 23 October 2026. It starts at $1,999 in the US for the 256GB model — around $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max at entry level.

The Duo folds book-style: a 5.4-inch outer display for everyday use, and a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple calls the largest ever fitted to an iPhone. It brings back Touch ID instead of Face ID, and drops down to two rear cameras with no telephoto lens.

Buying in Pakistan

Apple has no official store in Pakistan. Genuine PTA-approved stock comes through Mercantile, Apple's authorised distributor, and its authorised resellers. Everything else in the market is an independent import.

A few things specific to this device:

• Availability will be tight. The Duo is a first-generation, supply-constrained product, and Pakistan is not a first-wave market, so PTA-approved stock will take longer to arrive than a standard iPhone typically does.
• PTA tax is significant. Registration through DIRBS is mandatory or the phone loses cellular service. Because the tax scales with the device's declared value, and this is Apple's most expensive iPhone yet, expect a considerably higher tax bill than on a standard iPhone 18 Pro Max. Check dirbs.pta.gov.pk before buying.
• Repairs are the real risk. The folding display and hinge are the most fragile and expensive parts of any foldable, and authorised Apple service capacity in Pakistan is limited even for standard iPhones. A grey-import unit with a failed hinge or inner screen may have no practical local repair path — the strongest argument for paying the PTA-approved premium.

Bottom Line

The iPhone Duo is a real first-generation foldable, and it carries the trade-offs that come with that: no Face ID, no telephoto camera, and a hinge with no long-term reliability track record yet. At Rs. 9,00,000 and above for a PTA-approved unit, it costs roughly $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max even in the US market — and considerably more once Pakistan's import and DIRBS taxes are added.

It makes sense if the 7.6-inch inner display genuinely changes how you use a phone — as a fold-away tablet you can carry in your pocket. For camera quality, battery predictability, or straightforward value, the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains the better purchase for most buyers in Pakistan this year.

Alternatives in the Same Budget
